Indigo Dyeing + Vat Making

01 fresh leaf.jpg

Spend your morning playing with indigo in all its forms and reveling in the magic of blue. If you are curious about indigo and want to create the famed indigo vats this is the perfect workshop for you. I will lead students through creating two different small scale vats, the famed fructose vat and the workhorse iron vat, and learn the process of using these vats for dyeing fibers with indigo. Everyone will create an indigo color chart that will document the results of the vats across different fiber types. A kit will be sent in advance of the class so everyone can create their own vats. This is a 2 part virtual class taking place on October 2 and October 9 from 10:30-11:30am Pacific Time

The first class will cover general natural dye techniques, dive into the world of indigo, how it works and walk through the process of making the vats and dipping the fiber, which the students can do in real time with the instructor from their own home. The second class will look at the participants' results from the previous week and walk through how to finish off their fibers with a soy milk dip. We will discuss how to maintain and feed your vat and walk through some basic shibori techniques to dye the textiles in the indigo vats. The instructional craftbook will allow everyone to continue their exploration in more depth at their own pace.
